Welcome to the Izpisua Belmonte lab

In our laboratory, an eclectic and multicultural international group of scientists, we study how genes and molecules orchestrate the development and physiology of an organism, from the emergence of a one cell embryo, its development, birth, adulthood, and finally death. We utilize different in vivo (monkey, mouse, chick, zebrafish, and axolotl) and in vitro (human and rodent stem cells) model systems, as well as in silico modeling approaches.

In addition to improving our knowledge on early human development and adult physiology, our studies aim at increasing our understanding of the molecular mechanisms underlying cellular deterioration, disease and aging as well as help developing methodologies towards treating birth defects, degenerative diseases, organ transplantation and age related diseases.
